CHALLENGE

Develop a solution that will help travelers make decisions when it comes to the modality of their travel, both inside and outside of the Netherlands, while they are traveling. Give travelers agency on their travel method and think about solving problems surrounding the flow of traffic, road safety, affordability, and sustainability.

EXPLANATION

Currently, the tools that influence an individuals choice of travel is solved by apps like travel planners, google maps, etc are NOT the types of solutions we are looking for.

These solutions oftentimes assume that the traveler already knows their mode of travel. We are looking for solutions that will help the traveler make this choice, as well as solve one (or multiple) of these issues:

  • Optimisation of routes using real-time information on costs, time and activity.
  • Cancellation of flights that cause the need for offering alternate travel options to make sure  that the traveller gets to their final destination as comfortable and cost effective as possible.
  • Offering up different modes of travel that will ease the stress on the existing train network.
What do we need to make sure travellers will actually use these other options?
  • Develop a way to help tram-, bus- and other drivers in public transportation make choices on  speeding up, slowing down and stopping while they are driving without a timetable. And thus solving problems concerning connections, as well preventing the congestion of trams and  busses.
  • Give us insight in how travellers value the public transport they are using (while using it) and if their choice of modality is influenced by their travel experience.
